Garden hoses. Is there any difference in the myriad of types or are the differences simply in the names and colors. Well, apart from outside appearances and names, there are subtle differences in the construction of the different types of garden hoses. For example, a Flexzilla garden hose is nothing like your average hose. This is because… Wait, let me just do a complete review so you can get the long and refreshing explanation, not some watered down answer.

But before we get to the hose department and check out your Flexzilla garden hose, let’s take a look at some important factors to consider when looking for a garden hose.

Before the Flexzilla Garden Hose – Some Important Factors to Consider

Like I said earlier, despite not looking like it, garden hoses are not at all the same. When looking for a garden hose consider these characteristics first.

1. Length

Garden hoses come in different lengths, usually 25, 50, 75, and 100-feet long. It can be very tempting to buy the longest one available, but it’s always best to buy the length that you need. If it’s too long, it can be difficult to move around or drain before storing. Long hoses also tend to have less pressure coming out the end.

When buying a hose, measure the farthest distance you want it to reach, and buy one that goes a bit beyond that. A 50-foot hose is sufficient for most urban yards, but if you need one longer than that, consider buying two hoses. This way, you make it easy to move your hose around, and if you need to go beyond 50-feet, you can simply join them together. This is way easier (and safer, especially for your back) than lugging a massive hose around.

2. Hose Diameter

Hoses have different diameters, but the most common ones are ¾, 5/8, and ½-inches. The bigger the diameter (measured from the inside, not outside), the more water your hose will carry. The diameter also determines water pressure and weight of the hose. The bigger the diameter, the less pressure and the heavier the hose will be. A hose with a diameter of 5/8-inches strikes a very good balance.

A hose width of five-eighths inch is generally most useful. It’s a good combination of water flow and pressure without being too heavy. For light gardening tasks, a ½-inch hose is sufficient, but it is not suitable for high-pressure tasks like washing your car or connecting to a sprinkler.

3. Material

Garden hoses are mainly made of 4 types of material – vinyl, rubber, or a mixture of the 2, and polyurethane.

Vinyl Hoses

Are the least expensive and lightest but are also the least strong. They are very prone to cracking, splitting, kinking, and to being affected by harsh weather conditions. Because of this, they require extra care.

Rubber Hoses

They are generally the most durable ones but are also the heaviest and most expensive. The price tag on rubber hoses is well worth it as they are less likely to kink and get damaged by harsh weather, even the sun. They also have the added benefit of being able to carry hot water. Rubber hoses are generally your heavy duty, all season hoses.

As for vinyl hoses, they are your middle ground option – the best of both worlds, but a bit of the worst also.

Polyurethane Hoses

The best as, unlike the other three types, they don’t leach chemicals into the water. If you or your pets will be drinking from the hose, this is the best kind of hose to invest in as they are “drinking water safe”.

4. Strength

This is a big issue, especially if you live in an area with high water pressure. Not all hoses have the same strength, and to determine the strength of your hose, check the burst pressure. This is the pressure at which a hose is most likely to burst. If you plan to use your hose in high-pressure situations, such as attaching a nozzle, a hose with a high burst pressure rating is the way to go.

5. Flexibility

A garden hose, because of the nature of intended use, should be very flexible. And though a hose should be flexible, it shouldn’t kink as kinks lead to splitting. When looking for a hose look for one that is reinforced as these are less likely to kink and yet offer you great flexibility.

I told you there’s a lot to know about the humble hose. Picking one is not as simple as most people think. Now that you know how to choose a good hose, let’s take a look at the Flexzilla garden hose.
